Course Description: Join Drs. Burns and Levitt, “The Dynamic Duo,” for a day of fun and inspiring learning. In this workshop you will learn and practice techniques to help your patients overcome anxiety including panic attacks, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, etc. We will teach you tools to reduce resistance and boost motivation to change as well as numerous cognitive and behavioral techniques to help your patients defeat their anxiety. This workshop is highly interactive with many case examples and opportunities for practice using role plays.
Session 1. Reducing Resistance and Boosting Motivation
The Magic Button Technique, The Positive Reframe, The Magic Dial Technique, Dangling the Carrot, The Gentle Ultimatum, and Sitting with Open Hands
Session 2. The Cognitive Model
Eliciting Anxious Thoughts, Identifying Cognitive Distortions, Smile and Hello Technique, Self-Disclosure Technique, Shame Attacking Technique
Session 3. The Exposure Model
Rationale for Exposure, Interoceptive Exposure, The Fear and Avoidance Hierarchy, Identifying Safety Behaviors, Conducting Exposures
Learning objectives: After attending this course, you will be able to:
1) Identify two reasons patients with anxiety disorders may not want to change. 2) Describe “dangling the carrot” to increase motivation. 3) Identify cognitive distortions in anxious thoughts. 4) Describe the purpose of Self-Disclosure. 5) Design a “shame attacking” exercise. 6) Set up an exposure exercise for a patient with an anxiety disorder. 7) Describe the function of safety behaviors in anxious patients.
