He also served as the Medical Director of the Simonton Cancer Center, Malibu, California, and the Chief of Psychiatry at the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute, the only state-owned and operated psychiatric hospital in New Mexico.

Mariusz trained extensively with the leaders and pioneers in the fields of cognitive-behavior therapy, psycho-oncology, mindfulness, lifestyle modification, behavior change, stress management, and cultivating well-being. His mentors and teachers include Albert Ellis, Maxie C. Maultsby, Jr, O. Carl Simonton, Marsha Linehan, David Burns, Peter Fenner, Barbara Andersen, William Breitbart, Susan Michie, and Robert West. He lectures and conducts workshops on these subjects internationally. He is a Level 4 Advanced TEAM-CBT Therapist and Trainer certified by the Feeling Good Institute.

He founded the Beat the Odds®: A Multi-Modal Cancer Prevention and Survivorship Program workshops in Long Beach. Together with his wife Aleksandra Wirga, M.D., also a psychiatrist and psycho-oncologist, they conduct six-day retreats for cancer patients and their families based on the Beat the Odds Program.
Mariusz also developed the Boost the Odds Program – From Cancer Survivor to Life Thriver. It focuses on modifiable lifestyle cancer risk factors such as stress management, social support and communication, nutrition, physical exercise, sleep and rest, play and laughter, creative expression, and connection with nature in cancer survivors. Mariusz co-authored (together with Dr. Maxie C. Maultsby Jr. and Michael DeBernardi) the upcoming book “ABC of Your Emotions” (with over 200 cartoon-like illustrations and 250 pages). The book explains how emotions work, how to manage them, handle interpersonal conflict, achieve goals, protect your life and health, and feel the way you want to feel. Mariusz is particularly interested in using the newest technologies in a user-friendly way. He is currently involved in developing a multiplatform program for cancer patients and their families that includes interactive engagement in the therapeutic process using smartphones, videos, and videoconferencing.
