Course Description: Join Drs. Burns and Levitt, “The Dynamic Duo,” for a day of fun and inspiring learning. In this workshop you will learn and practice techniques to build better relationships with your patients, friends, and loved ones. We will teach you the five secrets of effective communication, an empathy toolbox that will help you to de-escalate conflict and form more authentic relationships. This workshop is highly interactive with many case examples and opportunities for practice using role plays.
Session 1. The Building Blocks of Empathy
The Five Secrets of Effective Communication: Disarming, Thought and Feeling Empathy, Stroking, I Feel Statements, and Inquiry
Session 2. Connecting with Challenging Patients
Using the Five Secrets of Effective Communication to connect with challenging patients: The case of the hopeless/angry patient and the sexually provocative patient
Session 3. Advanced Empathy Techniques
Bringing attention to the tension in the room: Changing the Focus and Positive Reframing techniques.
After attending this course, you will be able to:
- Use the disarming technique to de-escalate conflict
- Utilize I feel statements
- Demonstrate thought and feeling empathy with angry patients
- Describe how to empathize with sexually provocative patients
- Use inquiry to help your patients, friends, and loved ones say more about their thoughts and feelings
- Deliver the “changing the focus” technique to bring awareness to tension during a therapy session or conversation
